One of the initiatives of the DEI Committee is to increase awareness of employee and customer experiences surrounding celebrations and observances that may be unfamiliar but are important to fellow members, colleagues, and customers. This month, we spotlight Diwali, the Festival of Lights—a celebration that transcends borders, illuminating homes, hearts, and communities around the world.

As a proud immigrant Indian who deeply cherishes Diwali, I look forward to celebrating the festival with friends and family, enjoying sweets, creating beautiful rangoli designs, and sharing the warmth this special season brings. Diwali is more than a festival; it is a deeply meaningful experience rooted in love, togetherness, and the triumph of light over darkness.

Yet its significance extends far beyond the rituals. For many families, preparations begin weeks in advance with cleaning homes, shopping for gifts, and planning meals, all while balancing the demands of work and daily life.

In India, entire communities come alive during this season. Streets are adorned with twinkling lights, markets buzz with excitement, and the air is filled with anticipation. People take time away from work to gather with loved ones, exchange gifts, and celebrate together.

Similarly, in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, Diwali holds special significance for immigrant communities. It offers an opportunity to reconnect with cultural roots and pass traditions on to future generations while embracing life in a new home. The festival serves as a bridge between cultures, blending the vibrancy of South Asian traditions with the warmth of the communities that welcome them.

The Growing Impact of Diwali

The worldwide economic impact of Diwali continues to grow each year. In 2021, Amazon sellers experienced a significant surge in sales during the Diwali season, reflecting the increasing consumer activity associated with the holiday. In 2022, Diwali-related sales in India alone exceeded ₹2.5 trillion (approximately $30 billion USD), fueled in part by strong consumer demand following the pandemic.

Major retailers including Target, Walmart, and Costco now recognize Diwali as an important shopping season, offering holiday-specific merchandise and promotions. The growth of e-commerce has further expanded access to Diwali products, making it easier for consumers around the world to celebrate and share the festival with family and friends.

For businesses, however, Diwali represents more than increased shopping activity. It presents an opportunity to connect with customers on a personal level.

Understanding the importance of Diwali means recognizing shifts in customer expectations, communication preferences, and service needs during this time. Patience, respect, and flexibility are especially valuable when working with customers and employees immersed in the season’s celebrations.

Small gestures—such as offering a thoughtful Diwali greeting, creating festive promotions, or adjusting service hours—can help customers feel seen, respected, and valued.

Creating Meaningful Experiences During Diwali

Supporting customers during Diwali is not simply about discounts or special offers. It is about creating meaningful experiences that reflect the values of family, gratitude, prosperity, and togetherness that define the festival.

Organizations across industries can align their offerings with the spirit of the season:

  • Retailers can create curated Diwali gift collections.
  • Service providers can offer personalized packages tailored to holiday celebrations.
  • Hospitality organizations can develop special Diwali menus or experiences.
  • E-commerce businesses can provide expedited shipping options for time-sensitive gifts.

Being mindful of customer preferences during this period can also strengthen relationships. Diwali is often a time of reflection, religious observance, and family gatherings. Customers may appreciate communication that acknowledges the holiday or policies that provide additional flexibility.

Simple gestures such as extending return periods, recognizing the festival in customer communications, or offering additional support options can demonstrate cultural awareness and respect.

The Heart of Diwali

Diwali is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists, but its themes of hope, light, and renewal resonate far beyond any single tradition.

Whether through the lighting of oil lamps symbolizing the victory of good over evil, the sharing of sweets to strengthen relationships, or the creation of colorful rangoli designs to welcome prosperity, Diwali is ultimately a celebration of connection and optimism.

Across the globe—from India to Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and beyond—communities gather to embrace the festival’s spirit and bring light into their homes and lives.

In a world where differences can sometimes feel divisive, celebrations like Diwali remind us of what we share: a desire for connection, hope, belonging, and community.

By recognizing and understanding Diwali, we not only honor the rich traditions of our colleagues and customers, but we also create opportunities for greater empathy, understanding, and inclusion.

Bringing the Spirit of Diwali into CX and EX

This Diwali, let’s take the opportunity to illuminate our workplaces and customer experiences with inclusivity, empathy, and genuine care.

Whether you are celebrating the festival yourself or simply supporting those who do, the Festival of Lights offers a chance to brighten the lives of those around you.

As customer experience professionals, we can create more meaningful connections by understanding how Diwali may influence both employee and customer behaviors. This awareness can help us design experiences that are more inclusive, culturally sensitive, and responsive to the needs of diverse communities.

Let’s work together to create experiences that bring light, understanding, and belonging to the lives of our colleagues, customers, and communities.
